Just outside of town in San Miguel de Allende’s wine country is another experience that will make your senses come alive. At Cuna de Tierra, San Miguel’s most popular winery, their tapas and wine pairing experience will delight any food and wine enthusiast. If you love to imbibe, there may be no better way to spend a lazy afternoon in San Miguel de Allende.
The 3-hour experience starts with a guided tour of the vineyards while sampling different varietals, which includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Semillon. Once back at the bodega, guests settle into a small kitchen. There, the staff prepares food and wine pairings that play off each other like a fine orchestra playing on your palate.
The pairings showcase Cuna de Tierra’s finest wines, which are matched with everything from amazing salmon spreads on fresh crackers to artisan cheeses that will make your eyes roll back in your head in ecstasy as you blend the two contrasting textures of food and wine. The combination of the typically perfect weather, great wine, Cuna de Tierra’s simple architecture and locally sourced food makes this a gastronomic experience that is a must for wine lovers.
Tours are Wednesday to Sunday, and you’ll need reservations for the pairing ahead of time. All tours include a horse-drawn carriage ride through the vineyard, as well as an in-depth explanation of the production methods of the wine making process. The winery also holds cooking and pairing classes, private dinners and small events.
